Our Future Demands to City and TCHC

Rent-to-Own: The plan is active and we are hoping tenants will receive an offer letter by 2030. You can search it on Google. RPTRA submitted the 2nd petition to the city and province; it is still in the process.

Exclusively for Regent Park, the 2083 RGI units will become Rent-to-Own, a pilot project. We finished meeting with the mayor's office and we will meet with her again.

Our future demand are thus:

1. Rent-to-Own: The plan is active and we are hoping tenants will receive an offer letter by 2030. RPTRA submitted the 2nd petition to the city and province; it is still in the process. We finished meeting with the mayor's office and we will meet with her again.

2. Policy Change: Change the current policy of the cancellation of tenancy for families that reach market rent. If market rent is reached by a family then the tenancy is canceled after 2 years which makes it difficult for old parents, when their higher earning children move out. Leaving it impossible for parents to pay the higher rent in the meantime and causing them to reapply for a review.

3. Safety and Security: We demand the city and TCHC more security and foot patrols in the Regent Park area. Our women and children feel unsafe in Regent Park. We are wondering why north of Gerrard Street in Cabbage town there is no crime but south of Gerrard Street, in Regent Park there are a lot of crimes and shootings

4. Youth Job Creation: We want more jobs for youth especially for the ones graduating post secondary education from TCHC and the City.

5. Over-House and Under-House: Many families in Regent Park are over-house in Regent Park, please give priority housing when family members/youth pursue their own application or transfer within Regent Park.

Safety and Security: “…We are wondering why north of Gerrard Street in Cabbage town there is no crime but south of Gerrard Street, in Regent Park there are a lot of crimes and shootings.” I lived there. It is a high immigrant, low-opportunity neighbourhood. The combination of which equals crime. I would suggest to the City, that adding more of the same will only make matters worse. No issues with rent to own (though very few finnancial details available) options but dispersing (assimilating) new-comers is a much better option.
